01/17/2008 12:00am

The Central Market CBD Board of Directors elected Katie O’Brien of the Martin Building Company to serve on one of the five property owner board seats at its January meeting.

The position was left vacant by Michael Yarne, who will be leaving his position at the Martin Building Company and begin a new role as Development Advisor for the City of San Francisco in February.

Ms. O’Brien was also elected as Board President by the Central Market CBD Board of Directors, a position formerly occupied by Mr. Yarne.

“It has been a privilege to help start an organization like the Central Market CBD that has the ability to truly transform Central Market for the better," Mr. Yarne said. "We have pioneered a win-win approach to quality of life issues that incorporates grassroots community support with business pragmatism. This spirit is embodied in the new Community Guides Program," he said.

In his new role as Development Advisor, Mr. Yarne will focus on reforming the development and entitlement process in San Francisco and managing special public-private partnerships for the City.

“The Central Market CBD congratulates Katie O’Brien and welcomes her to the office of Board President,” said Daniel Hurtado, Executive Director of the Central Market CBD.

“The Central Market CBD Board of Directors also thanks Michael Yarne for his extraordinary leadership and energy as Board President and for his many contributions toward enhancing the quality of life in Central Market’s public realm,” Hurtado said. “He will be greatly missed and we wish him well in his new endeavor. We look forward to his continued participation in the Central Market CBD and in working with the organization to improve the Central Market neighborhood for everyone,” he said.

Ms. O’Brien is a Development Associate for the Martin Building Company, a multidisciplinary design and development firm.

The Martin Building Company’s offices are located at 54 Mint in Central Market. The company recently completed two residential mixed-use projects in the historic 410 and 418 Jessie Street buildings and new public open space Mint Plaza, all located within the Central Market district.

In addition to working at the Martin Building Company, Ms. O’Brien is also a member of the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition, the Urban Land Institute and the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association. Ms. O’Brien holds a Master’s degree in Real Estate Development from Columbia University in New York. She has been an active member of the Central Market CBD since 2006 and was integrally involved in its formation.

"I am excited to be joining the Board of Directors of the Central Market CBD after being an active member for the last year and a half," said Ms. O'Brien. "I look forward to my role as Board President, in serving the Central Market community, and in leading the Central Market CBD Board into the future," she said.
