The Central Market Community Benefit District (CBD) will spearhead a major cleaning and maintenance effort of Central Market’s public right of way in 2008 with the launch of its long-awaited Clean Streets Program on February 9.
The multi-faceted Clean Streets Program will consist of enhanced cleaning and maintenance of Central Market’s public realm above the baseline level of service provided by the City of San Francisco.
The Central Market district is bordered by Fifth and Ninth Streets in downtown San Francisco and includes the south side of Market Street and some blocks of Stevenson Street, Jessie Street and, at its most southern point, Mission Street.
The range of services will include:
• Sidewalk sweeping
• Litter removal and trash receptacle overflow management
• Weeding of tree basins, sidewalk cracks and landscape planters
• Reporting of bulky items for removal by the Department of Public Works
• Power washing
• Quartlery steam cleaning
• Graffiti abatement
Led by the Central Market Clean Team, the program will operate seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Clean Team will consist of one full-time cleaning person who will provide day-to-day litter removal, sidewalk sweeping, weeding, and trash receptacle overflow management. The Clean Team will also include a graffiti removal and power washing crew, a field supervisor, and dispatch service to support both the Clean Team and the Community Guides.
Central Market Dispatch Service
The Clean Team will carry radios that are connected to a central dispatch office for all maintenance-related calls. The dispatch service will not only support Central Market CBD personnel on the street, but will also function as a call center for the Central Market district.
The dispatch office will dispatch all calls to the appropriate Central Market CBD personnel on the street and will follow up with the individual who placed the call. All calls will be logged and maintenance issues in Central Market will be monitored and tracked.
The dispatch center will operate during the same service hours as the Community Guides Program: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The number to the dispatch call center – which will begin service on February 4 for safety and social service outreach calls, and February 11 for cleaning and maintenance issues – will be 415-543-5223.
The graffiti abatement service will be limited to private property within the boundaries of the Central Market district. The graffiti removal service will begin as a three-month pilot program in order to monitor the extent of graffiti in Central Market before establishing a service policy and schedule.
Clean Streets Launch Event
The Clean Streets service will commence in conjunction with the Community Clean-up Day for District 6 on February 9. Presented by the City of San Francisco’s Department of Public Works and Project Green Connect, the volunteer cleanup effort kicks off at 9 a.m. at United Nations Plaza at Seventh and Market Streets and continues to 12 p.m.
The Clean Streets Program is presented by the Central Market Community Benefit District (CBD) through a contract with the San Francisco Clean City Coalition and MJM Management Group.
