A team of Urban Studies students from San Francisco State University is working with the Central Market CBD in developing a comprehensive streetscape improvement plan and an implementation strategy for Central Market as a method of reversing the current deterioration of the neighborhood and restoring Market Street to its former grandeur.
The students selected Central Market CBD's proposal to develop a streetscape beautification plan for the corridor as a senior project. The plan will address specific issues related to the safety of the public realm (real and perceived) in Central Market, the improvement of aesthetic appeal, the need to improve sanitation, and the need to increase community identity.
Led by Central Market CBD Executive Director Daniel Hurtado and the organization's Identity Committee, the team of students will also be integrating any streetscape plans, standards, development plans, and engineering reports for Market Street.
"By making Market Street friendly, safe and clean to pedestrians and improving the aesthetics of the public right-of-way, this revitalization of the corridor can lead to a new image for Central Market and encourage an increased level of economic development in the neighborhood," said Hurtado.
The plan will also identify possible sources of funding for these projects such as grants, in-kind support, and sponsorships and donations.
The students will continue to work on the development of a streetscape improvement plan for the Central Market CBD through May.
The Central Market CBD invites you to get involved in this project by participating as a member of the Identity Committee. The committee meets twice monthly with the students through May.
