Students’ artwork flies high above San Francisco’s Central Market
As the arts scene in San Francisco’s Central Market neighborhood continues to blossom, banners designed by talented young artists were unveiled today and are dressing up nearly 100 light poles in the area stretching from Fifth to Ninth Streets. A partnership between The Art Institute of California-San Francisco and the Central Market Community Benefit District (CMCBD), the banners celebrate the vibrant creativity in visual and performing arts percolating in this busy portion of Market Street.
Byron Chung, President of The Art Institute of California – San Francisco, explained, “After learning more about the CMCBD through our work on the Art In Storefronts project, we thought it would be a great opportunity for our students to collaborate with this effective community organization while simultaneously contributing to the lively arts scene right in our backyard.”
The CMCBD provided oversight to a dedicated team of Art Institute of California – San Francisco students from one of the college’s advanced graphic design classes. The Art Institute also generously paid for the fabrication and installation of the banners. The designs, which feature whimsical illustrations inspired by local arts, will enliven the neighborhood that the CMCBD works diligently to improve.
“The student team from The Art Institute invested so much into this project, and now their beautiful work will be seen by thousands of people every day in one of the city’s busiest corridors,” said Daniel Hurtado, executive director of the CMCBD. “We’re also thrilled to highlight the burgeoning arts community that thrives in the Central Market. I see this project as part of the renaissance in creativity that our neighborhood is currently enjoying.”
According to Hurtado, the banners project is something of a kick-off of myriad activities that the CMCBD is presenting in the upcoming months. From July through September, the community-based organization partners with People in Plazas to present a series of outdoor mid-day concerts in on Mint Plaza, at 1275 Market Street Plaza, and on Market Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets. Also, in late September, the CMCBD is collaborating with a number of arts organizations to present a three-week cultural festival called 24 Days of Central Market Arts.
“With the continued support of such organizations as The Art Institute of California – San Francisco,” Hurtado added, “the Central Market is really becoming a nexus of powerful art. We look forward to helping it flourish for everyone to enjoy.”
